Idjwi Island - Nyumbu Beyond Journeys

Idjwi Island is located in Lake Kivu, on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. It is part of the South Kivu province in eastern DRC. The island is one of the largest in Lake Kivu, covering an area of around 340 square kilometers.

Idjwi is known for its stunning natural beauty, including lush landscapes, hills, and a diverse array of wildlife. It is home to a significant number of people who depend on agriculture and fishing for their livelihood. The local population primarily speaks Kinyarwanda, though some also speak Swahili and French.

Despite its beauty, Idjwi Island has faced challenges, including the effects of regional instability, poverty, and limited access to healthcare and education. Nonetheless, the island has remained a relatively peaceful haven compared to other parts of eastern DRC.

The island is also notable for its biodiversity, with a range of flora and fauna, including primates like chimpanzees and various bird species. Its proximity to Rwanda has made it a unique point of cultural and political intersection between the two countries.
