THE JOURNEY:

Chapter 1:

Kigali City

Days 1–2 | Arrival and Discovering Kigali City

Murakaza neza, welcome to Rwanda. Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our representative and transferred to Hemingways Kigali, an eco-luxury urban oasis tucked away in the quiet Kiyovu residential area in central Kigali.

The luxury hotel offers 20 luxury rooms and suites that are all about rest, local crafts, and feeling good. It is a wonderful spot to wash off the dust from your Serengeti safari and get ready for your big gorilla trekking adventure. With full access to premium wellness facilities from refreshing saltwater swimming pool, fitness center, hot tub, and sauna, spa and private outdoor yoga and meditation classes.

During your stay, discover Kigali through a privately guided city experience. Visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial exhibits for insight into Rwanda’s remarkable journey of resilience and renewal after the 1994 genocide against Tutsi.  Browse local craft markets and contemporary art galleries, and explore the vibrant culture that has helped shape one of Africa’s most dynamic capitals.

Chapter 2:

Akagera National Park

Days 3–6 | Rwanda’s Big Five Safari Destination

For couples seeking the ultimate romantic safari finale, the journey continues eastward to the ultra-exclusive Magashi Peninsula.

Suspended beautifully between earth and sky on the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga, this intimate eco-retreat features just two luxury couple’s suites and a single private villa. Days melt away on romantic boat safaris past wallowing hippos, while evenings bring the magic of a “traveling Kugisha dinner,” where traditional Rwandan stories and songs are shared under the stars. The true highlight for lovers is the alfresco rooftop Star Bed platform, allowing you to fall asleep to the gentle whispers of the savannah beneath a canopy of brilliant African stars. Complete with its own private plunge pool overlooking the Mutumba Mountains, it offers a deeply private sanctuary that celebrates the spectacular rebirth of Rwanda’s Big Five wilderness.

Akagera is one of Africa’s great conservation success stories. Following the successful reintroduction of lions and both black and white rhinos, the park once again supports the Big Five alongside a remarkable diversity of wildlife. Days are spent exploring the park’s diverse habitats on expertly guided game drives. Elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, antelope, lions, leopards, and rhinos roam across a landscape of open plains, acacia woodland, and shimmering lakes. Boat cruises on Lake Rwanyakazinga offer another perspective entirely, bringing guests close to hippos, Nile crocodiles, and prolific birdlife. For those seeking an especially memorable experience, optional hot-air balloon safaris reveal the park’s vast landscapes from above before concluding with a bush breakfast in the wilderness.

As evening approaches, return to camp for sundowners overlooking the lake before enjoying intimate dinners beneath the African night sky.

Chapter 3:

Volcanoes National Park

Days 7–9 | Gorillas Beneath the Volcanoes

A scenic helicopter flight from Kigali helipad north reveals Rwanda’s famed rolling countryside before the dramatic peaks of the Virunga Volcanoes emerge along the horizon.

Your romantic journey culminates at the ultra-exclusive Bisate Reserve, a four-villa volcanic sanctuary with private wood-fired hot tubs, bespoke “earth-to-plate” dining to indulge in, and embark on once-in-a-lifetime mountain gorilla treks. Positioned on the slopes of an extinct volcanic cone overlooking Volcanoes National Park, Bisate’s distinctive architecture draws inspiration from traditional Rwandan royal residences. The lodge’s strong commitment to conservation and reforestation creates a deeper connection to the landscape.

The highlight of your stay is mountain gorilla trekking. Accompanied by expert trackers and guides, venture into the forests of Volcanoes National Park in search of one of the habituated gorilla families that inhabit the Virunga ecosystem. Few wildlife experiences compare to the privilege of sitting quietly among mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

A second primate encounter introduces you to Rwanda’s charismatic golden monkeys. Agile and playful, these rare primates inhabit the bamboo forests that cloak the lower slopes of the volcanoes. Additional experiences may include visits to the Ellen DeGeneres Campus of the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, offering fascinating insight into the conservation efforts helping protect gorillas and their habitat for generations to come.

Chapter 4:

Lake Kivu

Days 10–11 | The Shores of Lake Kivu

Leaving the volcanoes behind, travel by road through Rwanda’s spectacular western highlands to the shores of Lake Kivu.

Spend the next two nights at Umurobyi Lodge, a peaceful lakeside retreat overlooking one of Africa’s most beautiful freshwater lakes. Inspired by the traditions of local fishing communities and thoughtfully integrated into its natural surroundings, the lodge offers an atmosphere of relaxation. Comfortable lakeside cottages, warm hospitality, and uninterrupted views across the water create an ideal setting to slow down and reconnect. Life moves at a gentler pace here. Enjoy boat excursions across the lake, kayak along quiet bays, visit nearby fishing villages, or simply relax on your private terrace and watch traditional wooden fishing boats move across the horizon. As evening falls, sunsets over Lake Kivu create one of the most romantic settings anywhere in East Africa.

Chapter 5:

Nyungwe National Park

Days 12–14 | The Ancient Rainforest

Continue south through Rwanda’s tea-growing highlands toward the ancient rainforest of Nyungwe National Park.

Your home for the next three nights is One&Only Nyungwe House, one of Africa’s finest rainforest lodges. Situated on the edge of a working tea plantation and surrounded by one of the continent’s oldest tropical forests, the lodge offers 22 luxury suites and villas, a rare combination of luxury, seclusion, and immersion in nature. Contemporary design, spacious suites, exceptional cuisine, wellness experiences, and attentive service combine to create a sanctuary amid the forested hills.

Nyungwe protects over 1,000 sq. km of rainforest and is one of Africa’s most important biodiversity hotspots, supporting thirteen primate species alongside hundreds of bird species, orchids, and butterflies. Chimpanzee tracking is among the highlights of your stay. Accompanied by experienced trackers, venture into the forest at dawn in search of habituated chimpanzee communities as their calls echo through the canopy. A canopy walk suspended high above the forest floor offers sweeping views across the treetops and surrounding mountains, revealing the remarkable scale of this ancient ecosystem. Visits to the surrounding tea plantations provide another perspective on the region, offering insight into one of Rwanda’s most important agricultural traditions while enjoying some of the country’s most spectacular scenery. Evenings at Nyungwe House are wonderfully atmospheric, with forest sounds drifting through the hills as mist settles across the surrounding landscape.

Day 15 | Return to Kigali

Following breakfast, transfer to the helipad for a scenic helicopter flight back to Kigali. Upon arrival, you will be assisted with your onward international departure. As your journey comes to an end, Rwanda leaves behind memories of wildlife encounters, rainforest adventures, volcanic landscapes, tranquil lakeshores, and exceptional hospitality, experiences shared together across one of Africa’s most beautiful and inspiring destinations.
